JOHN E. SPURGIN
Juror, Art of Well Being

John Spurgin was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in December 1932. He earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in art at Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana State University.)  The undergraduate and graduate degrees were separated by service in the U.S. Navy.  In 1973, he completed a Master of Fine Arts Degree in painting at the University of Cincinnati.

John began teaching in 1958 in Flint, Michigan.  From there he moved to higher education by accepting a position in the Art Department of Mankato State University (now Minnesota State University – Mankato.)  He was Department Chair there for thirteen years.  As Chair he became active in the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD,) the accrediting organization for post-secondary art educational institutions.  He served NASAD as an evaluator visiting dozens of institutions and ended as Chairman of NASAD’s Commission on Accreditation.

In 1997, John retired from education and moved with Myrna to return to her roots in Evansville, Indiana.  He found another opportunity to serve in 2001 by becoming the originating director of the New Harmony Hoosier Salon Gallery In New Harmony, Indiana.

Kentucky Arts  Council The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, provides operating support to Ohio Valley Art League with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

OVAL is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of visual arts in Hendeson, KY and the Tri-State area.
Exhibits are free and open to the public. The Rotunda Gallery and the Henderson Fine Arts Center galleries are wheelchair accessible.
