Juror Statement
In art history recycling was first documented through the art of Synthetic Cubism or collage created by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque from 1912-1914 and through the DaDa artist Kurt Schwitters, “for which he used litter found by chance”, and where his complex collages emerged in 1918. The philosophy for these artists and art movements may differ from the theme of this exhibit, but the formalism found in art historical collage informed my decisions as juror for The Art of Recycling III.
The artists who entered this competition presented some inventiveness in the creation of form and in the selection of materials from several environments known to man from the 20th and the 21st Century: domestic, industrial, technological, literary, and natural. The manner by which these same artists composed these materials sprang from expressiveness, narration, design, craft, and formalism. In selecting the awards, I looked for entries that demonstrated an understanding of the roots of collage, uniqueness, mastery of materials, and craftsmanship.
